Healthy Solutions Achievements
In 2010
- Spoke at the United Nations, on increasing access to affordable food in communities of color- from a farm level, to a community level to a global level.
- Hosted a Workshop at the first ever Black Farmers and Urban Growers Conference on Increasing Access to Affordable Foods Through Distribution Systems
- Held training and workshops to over 90 African American Producers on setting up Community Distribution Systems
- Hosted the First Summer Harvest Festival in Washington DC adn in the rain had over 280 community members in attendence to learn about health and the importance of nutrition and food in the
African American Community.
- Hosted our First Fall Harvest Festival that gave youth the oppurtunity to learn abour Food, Physical Activity and Health where over 260 community members came, learned and enjoyed.
- We have continued with our co-ops and markets- and through partnerships expanded them this year to addition co-op pick ups and market locations.
- We started our farm in Pennsylvania- Red Truck Farm.
- We hosted youth for a summer enrichment program in Alabama, where they learned agriculture, math, and african american history with program partner TELA.
- We started our Value Added Project in DC with Program Partner My Community Union.
- We have increased the amount of food our co-ops and markets bring East of the River to 10,000lbs a month, last year we were at 5,000lb.
- We worked with new farmers this year and gave technical assistance to new farmers this year.
- We helped change policy with the DC FEED ACT,
- Officially became UN partners
- Expanded Healthy Solutions to open new location in California.
- Healthy Solutions assisted in the creation of the Community Leaders Let's Move! Tool Kit
- Healthy Solutions was award the Metro Washington Public Health Associations Award in honor of our work in Washington DC
- Healthy Solutions was featured on the Let's Move Blog, White House Blog, and USDA blog.
Prior Years
- Given over 3500 families access to fresh fruits and vegetables through our co-ops
- Employed 6 High School Students to teach elementary age children the importance of healthy eating.
- Supplied 1 Farmers Market in Ward 7
- Supplied 6 corner stores in Ward 7 and 8 with farm fresh produce
- Supplied 2 schools with fresh organic produce in washington dc
- Worked with 3 counties in North Carolina to improve of all health to students in rural areas
- Working with a school in Alabama to bring health, education and agriculture to life again
- Brings in over 10,000lb of produce a month to East of the River Communities in Washington DC
- Being selected as a Pilot Program in Washington DC to reshape the way the city looks at nutrition and helping to win the fight of Child Hood Obesity.
- To date we've helped 25 families reduce the medication they take by changing the foods they eat.
- To date we've assisted 5 insulin dependent diabetics become non- insulin dependent just by helping them make changes to their diets
- Helped over 86 small family farms extend their growing season and have a source to which to sell their crop.
- Educated over 1500 youth with in school HEFL program
- Feed over 300 a month with organic produce
- Host programs in Washington DC, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Alabama
- Spoke at the United Nations about food access in the African American Community
